#5132, Ambient Landscapes
Hear works about a Nordic winter by Finnish musician Juha Mäki-Patola; the American Southwest by New York-based SUSS; a nature reserve in Colombia by Monte; and field recordings from Puerto Rico by composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón, part of Kronos Quartet's 50 for the Future repertoire.
From Finnish musician Juha Mäki-Patola, listen to ambient minimalism with a tactile sense of place inspired by the Nordic winter of 2024-25. Then, hear “ambient country music” by New York band SUSS, and their atmospheric use of pedal steel guitar, which could evoke the feeling of spending a night under the stars in the American Southwest in the desert – say… in Ash Fork, AZ.
Listen to music by Monte, aka Simón Mejía of Colombian dance band Bomba Estéreo, which marries field recordings of bird songs and indigenous peoples collected from the environment along the Magdalena River to guitar, synths, and beats, augmented by electronics. Hear “Colibri” (Hummingbird), which is also the name of a nature reserve in Colombia. Also, hear Puerto Rican-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón and “Marejada" -a piece written for Kronos Quartet's 50 for the Future project. The piece “combines field recordings from the waves in Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo, and birds from La Jungla Beach in Guánica, both located in Puerto Rico, along with undulating gestures in the strings reminiscent of the sound of waves”, (KronosQuartet.org).
Plus, there’s a “krautrock” classic by Tangerine Dream – “3 A.M. at the Border of the Marsh from Okeefenokee” - electronic music full of psychedelic touches, which occasionally opens into eerie, nocturnal soundscapes, (John Schaefer). Also, hear more ambient music created in and with the wilds of Ontario during the early 1980s, by Mychael Danna & Tim Clément, which includes the call of the loon (aka “Stupid Canadian Wolf-Bird”). That, and more. - Caryn Havlik
