#4883, Music from the Caribbean and South America

New Sounds | Apr 25

There’s collaborative music by Amsterdam-based duo of Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti, a Bolivian-born singer and multi-medium performer, and Chicago expat jazz drummer with Puerto Rican origins, Frank Rosaly, who together dig into their ancestral roots in Bolivia, Brazil, and Puerto Rico on their futuristic album, MESTIZX. The album title is a non-gendered version of the sometimes slurred Spanish colonial word for a “mixed person” and somehow "gives voice to all of us that live in-between," (Rosaly.) Listen to a collision of Latin rhythmic patterns and oblong swing from pre-and post-colonial Latin America as it rumbles with avant jazz, art punk, Chicago post-rock, bomba, plena, cumbia, Andean, minimal, electronica, and folk, (Int. Anthem Bandcamp.)

Also, there’s recent music by Cuban pianist and composer Roberto Fonseca, which looks to the West African roots of Cuban rhythms, along with Roberto Fonseca’s collaborative work with poet, rapper, and spoken word artist Mike Ladd, and another collaborative tune with the Malian singer and songwriter Fatoumata Diawara.

Then, listen to music by Argentine Gustavo Santaolalla, (perhaps best-known for his soundtrack work for Brokeback Mountain), in music from his record, Ronroco. Not to be outdone, there’s playful folk-tronica by Gaby Kerpel which uses plenty of other instruments from South America and samples from anywhere. Plus, Afro-Peruvian songstress Susana Baca, Brazilian guitarist Celso Fonseca, and more. - Caryn Havlik
