  • Speaking of non-investigations, what's the story with last week's shooting and massive manhunt on the Upper West Side? Somehow one off-duty cop had an "altercation" for the second time in two months on the same quiet corner, and this time the "attacker" stole the officer's gun. The NYPD Hercules team and NYPD helicopters were scrambled, turning the UWS into something that resembled a movie-set. But nobody has explained what the cop was really doing there.

  • Ugh, I missed the special! Did WNYC even promote it? (I didn't hear anything this week). Will WNYC be rebroadcasting it?

  • I caught the tail end of Stephen's interview this afternoon during a scheduled break from ATC. Is the audio posted somewhere on the website? Did the MTA revert to the original plan for building the oculus?

  • Looks like a wonderful store. Another great hat store: Worth & Worth, which used to be on 5th Avenue, but now is at 45 west 57th street 6th floor (hatshop.com).

  • Almost any of the books by Abraham Joshua Heschel are profound, inspiring reads, but I particularly love God In Search of Man. It turns out that James Carroll, author of the award-winning Constantine's Sword, has mentioned Heschel as one of his mentors (when Carroll was a seminary student in the 1960s)

  • every so often around holidays local supermarkets put up inadvertently funny signs. One of my favorite (seen in Manhattan): "KOSHER HAMS FOR HANNUKAH!"
