For this New Sounds, hear a work by Michael Harrison, called "Hijaz."  The composition features the Young People’s Chorus delivering vowels, South Indian rhythmic and tabla syllables, and a universal prayer as the text.  Together with new music heavyweight/adventure cellist Maya Beiser, the versatile composer/percussionist Payton MacDonald (Alarm Will Sound, Super Marimba), and the composer Michael Harrison on just-intonation piano, the new work is intended to invoke a sense of pilgrimage.

On October 16th, 2011, JACK Quartet hosted Extended Play, the American Composers Orchestra's Sounds of a New Century Festival all-day marathon of new-music featuring passionate and adventurous New York City-based ensembles. With JACK leading the way, the nine hour extravaganza took place from noon to midnight, featured eight ensembles, and highlighted the works of forty-four composers.

Honors For Two City Groups, and a Visit With the First Lady

But it happened on Wednesday when students from two groups accepted the 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award for their programs, which bring together students from across the city and enhance learning.

The discipline statistics released by the city's Department of Education are fascinating, and factual nuggets were unearthed in the variety of news reports about them, including the breakdown of suspensions of minority and special education children, some cases of kindergarten suspensions and some schools that showed unusual patterns.

This week on the Young Artists Showcase, the Young People's Chorus of New York pays a visit to our studio. More than 1,300 children from ages seven to 18 participate annually through the YPC's core after-school program.
