New Approaches to Shape Note Hymns

For this New Sounds, listen to music that is rooted in the shape-note singing tradition from the 19th century, with tunes and texts directly taken from Protestant hymnals, and other works originally notated in "shape notes" (square, round, triangular, and diamond-shaped note heads) that enabled non-music reading congregations to sing them. Listen to a brand new duo recording from trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Uri Caine, who arranged some of these tunes, and wrote originals inspired by these shape-note hymns, but wordless. Then, from Anonymous 4, listen to vocal renditions of these tunes, where the quartet sings the hymn through in the solfège syllables (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti) before adding words on the second time around.

Accordionist and composer Guy Klucevsek stops by for a visit, on the occasion of the reissue of “Polka From the Fringe,” 29 previously out-of-print tracks for accordion by Klucevsek and 27 other composers.  With titles like Lois V Vierk’s “Attack Cat Polka,” or Elliott Sharp’s jolt of punk in “Happy Chappie Polka,” there’s a bit of playful wackiness to the collection, yet also some loveliness – like William Duckworth’s “Polking Around” and Peter Garland’s “Club Nada Polka.”

Music for Cathedrals, Part 1

Listen to the acoustic and electronic works that make use of cathedral acoustics, or are inspired by the soaring architecture of some of the great old cathedrals on this New Sounds program.  Hear music by Missy Mazzoli, and Victoire from “Cathedral City” – a collection of electroacoustic chamber music works.  There’s music from Jurgen Knieper's original score for the Wim Wenders film, “Wings of Desire,” – the solemn, meditative "Cathedral of Books."  Listen also to music from Briane Keane & Omar Faruk Tekbilek inspired by Hagia Sophia, a former Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica, which turned into an imperial mosque, and is now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey.

Philip Glass’s piano works have had a longstanding and widespread influence – on the so-called Post-minimalist composers, but also on musicians working in the electronic dance world.  One of them is Francesco Tristano, who brings electronica’s repeating motifs back to the piano in his solo piece “The Melody.”  We’ll hear that, as well as several of William Duckworth’s “Time Curve Preludes,” often considered the first major Post-minimalist work, and a work from the late Canadian composer Ann Southam directly inspired by Glass’s piano works.
