Tuesday night, the Scottish deerhound Foxcliffe Hickory Wind floated past six other champion dogs to win Best in Show at the 135th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden.

Although the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is often compared to a fashion show, a number of show dogs have multiple titles in field sports and obedience—competitions that require them to use both their DNA and their brains—and an even larger number of retired champions go on to careers as therapy dogs.

The 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will be held on February 14 and 15 in Madison Square Garden. But across the street at the Penn-Top Ballroom at the Hotel Pennsylvania on Friday night, the Pre-Westminster Gala Puptials was the center of Midtown West’s canine attention.

For show dogs, it all came down to last night's results. After weeks of grooming, pampering and prepping, the officials at the Westminster Dog Show declared Sadie, a four-year-old Scottish Terrier, the "Best in Show."

We got to thinking about President Obama's announcement to fund the construction of new nuclear plants that would be the first since the Three Mile Island disaster in 1979. What we started wondering as we always do, is what is the local impact of this national policy. So we'll check in with the Mayor of Waynesboro, Georgia, near a nuclear plant set to expand.
We've got plenty of Olympic coverage lined up too, from the latest medal count to an expert take on the finer side of sport: the fashion of figure skating. Yes, really. And it will be interesting. Trust us.

You may never feel like you get your money's worth at a hotel again. New York's Hotel Pennsylvania in midtown Manhattan serves as the lodging for the dogs who participate in the Westminster Dog Show. From the moment the four-legged animals enter the lobby, they are greeted with goodies ... and we don't mean doggie treats.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show just wrapped up, and announcing the winner of The Takeaway's dog show! More than a hundred listeners sent photos of their dogs via Facebook and email and everyone else got the chance to vote. Now we have a winner: It's a chihuahua named Benny, submitted by Barbara Fullerton.
You can hear WNYC's resident dog expert, Sarah Montague, make some sharp observations about a few of the other contestants.
