Vespers

Hear new takes on the Vespers, most not involving the voice or prayer, yet still with a sense of ritual, when things become dark and still, with Oscar Bettison's "Gauze Vespers," & more.

Vespers

Sunday, August 03, 2014

This New Sounds program takes a new look at the ancient form of ritual music for evening prayer – Vespers.  This evening prayer service, also known as “eveningsong,” is found in both Western and Eastern (Byzantine) Catholicism, along with Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches, and some Protestant denominations as well.  The idea was to have a service at sunset, when the sun’s angle would hit the church and set it aglow with magical light through the stained glass windows.

New Releases, January 2014

Friday, January 31, 2014

It's the end of the month, which is the time for sharing the latest releases that have come across John Schaefer's desk and into the New Sounds inbox.  On deck, a work by Bryce Dessner that was premiered at a New Sounds Live concert event just a few years ago, "St. Carolyn by the Sea," as well as film music by Jonny Greenwood (of Radiohead fame.)  Then, listen to some music, both early and late from Denmark, along with what very well might place highly on John Schaefer's end-of-year best-of list: the debut record from the Irish "supergroup," the Gloaming.  That, and more.
