Brett Kimmel: Create a 'To-Die-For' Place

Brett Kimmel was interested in school reform and decided the best way to change schools was to become a teacher. Then he was interested in creating a place where teachers would crave to work, and he created his own school, the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School, also known as WHEELS. As its first senior class is about to graduate, and every student has applied to college, he thinks there are lessons here for others who want to make systemic change.

Matt Damon and Mother Reject Union's Award

Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige wrote a letter on behalf of herself and her actor son, Matt Damon, to the National Education Association, saying she no longer would accept the union's Friend of Education award. The reason: the union's president had collaborated with the founder of Teach for America on an opinion article.

Former New York Officials' Trip Paid by Pearson

The former state education commissioner, David M. Steiner, was among the officials from various states whose trips were paid for by the Pearson Foundation, the nonprofit wing of the testing company. The news also included a scary bus incident in the Bronx and an expanding international teacher recruitment organization.
