The shooting of a 14-year old boy Wednesday evening in in the courtyard of Newark's Riverview Terrance housing complex is the city's tenth homicide in 10 days.
Police Director Samuel DeMaio says that while so many killings in just over a week is a horrible toll, it doesn't necessarily represent an uptick in violence. Newark is still on pace to have roughly the same number of homicides as last year.

June 21 is the last day of school for students at Sandy Hook Elementary. The year is finishing with four first-grade classes, down from five, after a gunman killed 20 students in December. One Sandy Hook family, whose daughter just finished first grade at the school, describes their recovery as taking "two steps forward and two steps back."

It’s been nearly a week since 16-year-old Kimani Gray was shot by plainclothes officers in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Days of protest have followed with people in the community expressing anger as the city defended the officers' use of deadly force. His mother, Carol Gray, has been struggling this week to separate the details of her son’s life with how he died.
