Department of Correction Commissioner Dora B. Schriro denied reports that a fight club exists within Rikers Island in which inmates impose their own violent system of order.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed a new bill into law Tuesday that limits the city’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities on Rikers Island.

A fire that broke out at Rikers Island on Sunday and injured four firefighters has forced 241 inmates to relocate to different parts of the facility, according to the city's Department of Corrections.

A new report finds that while each year tens of thousands of people arrested for minor offenses are released pending a trial or some other outcome, a substantial number that can’t afford bail and end up in Rikers Island for things like shoplifting, smoking marijuana or getting in fights. According to one attorney, whether or not a defendant is released on bail is “the single most important factor about how a case is going to get resolved."

On Rikers Island, a small group of inmates have also been been busy preparing turkey, stuffing and rice. And while they won't get to enjoy the meal themselves, the poor and homeless will.
