The recently published National Recording Preservation Plan from the Library of Congress includes a recommendation to "encourage scientific and technical research leading to the development of new technologies to recover, reformat, and preserve audio recording media". Although at first sight this passage seems to refer to high-tech projects such as IRENE, there may be other, more modest ways to advance audio preservation technology. Here is an example.

When Dr. Dre needed a fresh sample for his 2001 hit single with Snoop Dogg, “The Next Episode,” he hit up East Village record store co-owner Jared Boxxs’s shop Sound Library. Dr. Dre walked away with the David McCallum album “Music: A Bit More of Me” and a Billboard chart topper.

For almost 40 years, the late BBC radio host John Peel spun cutting-edge tracks and launched entire careers with his legendary “Peel Sessions.” Along the way, he amassed an enormous, meticulously organized music collection. Now, artifacts from that collection are finding a home online. Joining us to tell us more about the project are Tom Barker of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, and Peel’s widow, Sheila Ravenscroft.

Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera had arguably the most important moment of his career yesterday, in a game aginst the Minnesota Twins, when he surpassed Trevor Hoffman as the major league career leader in saves with 602. Rivera has been the Yankees' closer since 1997, so this milestone has been 15 years in the making.
