Oscar Nominations on the Lopate Show

We've spoken with a number of actors, directors, and writers of some of the films nominated for Oscars this year. The Academy Awards will be held Sunday, February 24. In the meantime, you can listen to those interviews here!

John Gatins was here in November to discus "Flight," with the film's director Robert Zemeckis. Gatins wrote the screenplay, which has been nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Listen to that interview here.  

"Silver Linings Playbook" has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. David O. Russell was on the Lopate Show in January to discuss the film, which he wrote and directed. Listen to that interview here.

"Django Unchained" has been nominated for Best Picture. we spoke with Samuel L. Jackson about his role in the film and his career. Listen to that interview here.

"Argo" is up for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. We spoke with former CIA agent Antonio Mendez, who wrote the book on which the movie is based—listen to that interview here. And Chris Terrio, who wrote the screenplay, is coming on the show Tuesday, February 12. 

The documentary "How to Survive a Plague," about AIDS activists in the early 1980s, has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Director David France was on our show in September, along with activist Peter Staley, who is featured in the film. Listen to that interview here

"Searching for Sugarman" is also up for Best Documentary Feature. We spoke with director Malik Bendjelloul and Rodriguez, the subject of the film, in July. Listen to that interview here.

The Music Of 'Girls', Oscar Nominations, Debo Band

Today on Soundcheck: The breakout HBO comedy Girls chronicles the trials and travails of a group of 20-something women who are figuring it all out -- or at least trying to -- in New York City. Girls returns this Sunday for its second season, and so we speak with the show's music supervisor Manish Raval about his work on the series, and about as the new Girls Soundtrack Vol. 1 compilation.

Then, Slate film critic Dana Stevens tells us about this year's music-related Oscar nominations including the categories for Best Original Song and Score, as well as a few notable snubs.

And the dance-ready Eithopian funk band Debo Band performs in the Greene Space.

"Saving Face": An Oscar-Winning Look at Acid Attacks in Pakistan

There are at least 100 reports of acid attacks in Pakistan each year, and they're overwhelmingly against women. This figure only accounts for the reported cases — it’s assumed that many more go unreported.

The Academy Award-winning documentary short film "Saving Face" looks at this phenomenon through the experiences of three people: Zakia, a 39-year-old woman whose husband threw acid on her after she filed for divorce; Rukhasana, a 23-year-old woman who was attacked by her husband and his family; and Dr. Mohammad Jawad, a plastic surgeon dedicated to healing the faces of the injured women.

'The Artist' Wins 5 Oscars, Including Best Picture

The Artist won five Oscars Sunday night, making it the first silent film to win big at the Academy Awards since the original ceremony 83 years ago. Other winners included Meryl Streep, who won Actress in a Leading Role for The Iron Lady; Octavia Spencer, who won Actress in a Supporting Role for The Help; and Christopher Plummer, who won Actor in a Supporting Role for Beginners.
