Prison Program Helps Moms Connect with Kids

For some incarcerated women, spending time behind bars means missing out on the formative years of their child's or grandchild's life. But a program is trying to change that. Mommy Reads, a ten-week course offered through Sarah Lawrence College to mothers and grandmothers incarcerated at the Valhalla Correctional Facility in Valhalla, New York, helps women write children's stories and then record themselves narrating them. Polly Bresnick has been lead teacher and volunteer coordinator of the program for two years.

But since Drake's death at age 26 in 1974, his recordings have gradually reached more and more listeners. It hasn't been entirely clear just from where he evolved his distinctive musical style. Now a brand new album gives David Garland the opportunity to show that the songwriter who had the greatest influence on Nick Drake was his mother, Molly Drake.

He spoke with the mother of musician, will.i.am, Segway inventor Dean Kamen, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and educator and innovator Salman Khan. When did these moms know that their children were special? When they were in the crib. Jackie Bezos (Jeff's mom) says "I think I knew early on that he was wired differently ... when he tried to take his crib apart with his screwdriver, that cinched it."
