IRENE
Region Prepares for Hurricane Irene (WNYC)
Check out WNYC’s map to see if you live in an evacuation zone. And make sure to pack your Urban Survival Kit. Mayor Bloomberg will announce whether the city will order an evacuation for its low-lying areas today. He’s already ordered the evacuation of nursing homes in those areas. Some observers note he’s trying to make it very obvious he’s not in Bermuda like he was during the December blizzard. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has issued a state of emergency and is urging those on the Jersey Shore and the state’s barrier islands to evacuate. Casinos in Atlantic City are closing and residents and visitors are evacuating. NYU and Columbia are postponing freshman move-ins because of the hurricane.

How Much Did Gov. Christie Know About the Port Authority Toll Hikes? (Star-Ledger)
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie went on a tear yesterday, attacking former governors Paterson and Corzine, Mayor Bloomberg and the head of the Port Authority. But could he really not have known that the agency was planning a $4 toll hike, especially since he’s appointed many of his closest confidants to positions at the Port Authority? Some political watchers in New Jersey say no. They point out that he announced he would be OK with a $2 toll hike in June, "So, they’re both going to attempt to look like heroes by cutting an outrageous increase in half."
