The holiday originally started in 1882 in New York City as a way for early unions to organize for basic workers rights. On the first Labor Day 30,000 union members to a picnic with their families in Union Square Park.

NJ Officials Encourage Beach Days

New Jersey officials said the state's beaches are open for business this Labor Day weekend, after an unprecedented evacuation of the Jersey Shore in advance of Hurricane Irene. Speaking earlier this week, Governor Chris Christie urged residents and visitors to "get down to the Jersey Shore," after water tests showed that Cape May and Ocean County beaches were safe.
