Electroacoustic Songs

Saturday, August 16, 2014

For this New Sounds, hear music by sean-nos singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, from a brand new recording, “Foxlight.”  The producer/guitarist Leo Abrahams is all over this unclassifiable album (Confessional ballad? Minimalist art-folk? Electro-Irish trad?), featuring electro-acoustic accompaniment to Ó Lionáird’s personal songs, sung mostly in Gaelic.  With a host of intriguing guest collaborators -composer Jon Hopkins, strings duo Geese, folktronica innovator Leafcutter John and fiddle and hardanger player Caoimhin O Raghallaigh- the violins, viola, cello, fiddle, guitars and keyboards are expertly woven into the epic electro-acoustic compositions.

Far - Music About Distance

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Listen to music that deals with distance for this New Sounds program. Hear Joby Talbot’s orchestration of a White Stripes song, “Never Far Away,” along with music from Armenian-American Eve Beglarian and her piece written for cellist Maya Beiser, “I am writing to you from a far-off country.”  Then, listen to music from beyond the end of the earth – settings of poetry about the moon by Francis White.  Hear her work, “far, still” for chamber choir, cello, and electronics, which was commissioned by Seattle’s Solaris Vocal Ensemble and appears on their recent record, "Floodsongs".  Plus, music from Lisa Gerrard and Klaus Schulze, and more.

Where Are They Now?

Monday, September 19, 2011

For this New Sounds, we'll hear music from the late Bo Hansson of Sweden, who was known for his progressive rock record based on the Lord of the Rings, back in the early days of the show (when cavemen roamed the earth.)  However, since then, Hansson had written a string quartet and some lovely choral music besides.  We'll listen to some of these works and revisit German keyboard player and electronic music master Klaus Schulze, sampling some of his classic material and some of his most recent works.
