New Sounds of Gospel Trombone

Thursday, November 14, 2013

For this New Sounds program, dig into the instrumental gospel tradition, specifically, the one centered around the trombone.  It is prominent in some churches, such as the United House of Prayer for all People in Harlem, and the shout-gospel choir (with brass band), the McCollough Sons of Thunder.  Listen to their roof-raising performance, recorded at the World Festival of Sacred Music from May of 2001 - a New Sounds Live event.  Led by Elder Babb, the 17 trombones, trumpet, percussion, brought down the house at Merkin Hall, with the dancing, singing and clapping in the aisles.

Blast the Horns

For this New Sounds program, listen to the blistering horns of party bands from the world over.  There’s Afro-pop from veteran of Ghanaian highlife Ebo Taylor and his German band, featuring the godfather of Afro-beat drumming, Tony Allen.  Hopefully we'll hear something from the marching band madness that is the Chicago-based outfit Mucca Pazza (P.S. - you HAVE to check their outfits when they perform!), Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars, some Ethiojazz, and maybe something from Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy.
