The results are in, and thanks to all of the listeners who submitted their short-lists. Here's the rebuttal to last night’s program where we present what you, the listeners, have chosen as the best new music releases of 2013. Listen for some world music-inflected jazz, an acoustic piano trio (also Radiolab favorites), and two poignant records on themes of war and its aftermath.  Find out who emerged victorious from this year's contest on the 29th annual New Sounds Listener Poll show.

John Schaefer's Annual Top Ten -2013 edition

Wednesday, January 08, 2014

For this New Sounds, listen to John Schaefer's completely personal and opinionated look at the ten best new music releases of 2013. There will probably be something by a Russian pianist/composer and a Tibetan singer, perhaps some music from a guitarist/composer who also plays in the National, and a vocalist/composer who practically creates choruses of herself.  Also, listen for music from the IDM world with gamelan-like percussion, as well as Indo-jazz music from a South Asian suite.

Fair Play for Women

Tuesday, August 06, 2013

As host John Schaefer observed about the previous show, it was dominated by music from men, so to keep the air fair, this New Sounds program contains works by women. Preview the forthcoming record by Juliana Barwick, “Nepenthe,” featuring countless fragments of her voice electronically layered to create soaring choral music.  Then, listen to selections from a song cycle by Leah Kardos based on themes of technology, loneliness and the human condition. All of the texts have been taken from a few years of collected spam emails.
