New Sounds

Big Bands

Saturday, September 03, 2011

For this New Sounds, hear new music for large ensembles, sometimes with lots of brass, sometimes with an electric guitar.  We'll dig into the record "Infernal Machines" by Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, which brings together the best of mid-century big bands and the minimalism of Steve Reich.  There's also music by John Hollenbeck & the Jazz Big Band Graz from Austria along with music by New Yorker Roy Nathanson and the Jazz Passengers.  Plus, music that looks to Ethiopia from the Either Orchestra, and more.

New Percussion Works

Saturday, March 12, 2011

Hear a groove-centered propulsive work by San Diego-based composer, performer and improviser Christopher Adler tonight on this New Sounds - just one of several works for percussion.  Hear Adler's "Ecstatic Volutions in a Neon Haze."  Also, there's some percussive music about architecture from drummer/composer John Hollenbeck.  Ethos Percussion Group plays his "Ziggurat, (interior)," requiring teamwork from each of the four artisans to construct the sacred structure. Also, something brand new from Gamelan Son of Lion and more.

Unusual Lead Instruments

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

For this New Sounds, hear some recent recordings that feature a strange assortment of music-making devices.  From music boxes, a choir that whistles, and the Chinese double-reed woodwind instrument called the suona, we'll hear from Bill Frisell, John Hollenbeck's Large Ensemble, Beat Circus, and more.  Not to be outdone, there's something from Gordon Grdina’s East Van Strings which showcases the oud, Arabic lute, paired with Western strings.
