This New Sounds program aims to take a tour of music around the world, in 59 minutes or less.  Listen to Bengali, Punjabi, Ethiopian and Senegalese music, along with other sounds.  Punjabi wedding music meets New Orleans Brass bands in the music of Brooklyn-based party band Red Baraat, then Samuel Yirga takes the groove of Ethiopian music as his starting point in a trance-jazz tune.

For this New Sounds program, the first of a two-part series, we'll listen to many works that draw inspiration from the text of the requiem mass, but have come from different parts of the world. For starters, there's Mistico Mediterraneo, a collaboration involving three different artists: Sardinian trumpet player Paolo Fresu, Italian bandoneonist Daniele Di Bonaventura and Corsican all-male choral group A Filetta.  We'll hear music from the principal composer of A Filetta, Jean-Claude Acquaviva, with his “Rex tremendae” and “Figliolu d’ella”  from a requiem written in 2004.  And much more.

From the melodious inflections of phone messages, listen to a number of works sourcing voicemails, most from tape(!) on this New Sounds program. Hear Irish composer Roger Doyle’s “Memento Mori,” composed around intimate verbal time capsules culled from various answering machine messages of Doyle's family, close friends and partners, all of them recorded and preserved in the late 80's.

For this edition of New Sounds, we'll listen to larger ensemble pieces with multiple soloists.  First off, from a 1976 orchestra piece, we'll hear "Runes" by Keith Jarrett, with Jan Garbarek on saxophone, Charlie Haden on bass, and the composer at the piano.  Then there's music by drummer/composer Alex Cline for a 6-12 member ensemble, featuring Jeff Gauthier on violin.  Plus music from a soundtrack to the Merchant of Venice by Jocelyn Pook, with countertenor Andreas Scholl, and more.
