As Fashion Week gets underway, Hazel Clark, a professor in the MA Fashion Studies Program and research chair of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design and the co-author of The Fabric of Cultures: Fashion, Identity, and Globalization  (Routledge, 2008) kicks off the February series on New York's place in the global fashion picture.

Greg David, director of the Business & Economics Reporting Program at CUNY Journalism School, contributor to Crain's New York Business and author of Modern New York: The Life and Economics of a City, looks at the economic impact of Fashion Week on the city.

The total economic impact of Fashion Week will be an estimated $865 million this year, according to city officials — an all-time high. The projection, which factors in current events as well as those surrounding September Fashion Week events, is 2- to 3-percent over last year's figures.

After Fashion Week cancelled Gulnara Karimova's show, there's word that the oldest daughter of the controversial leader of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, will relocate the catwalk to Cipriani restaurant.
