Five thousand pictures documenting Hispanics in New York City will be preserved by Columbia University. The photos, from El Diario/La Prensa's archives from 1978 to 2001, will be digitized and indexed, and will be accessible through the university's library.

When Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was named U.S. senator for New York in 2009, to fill the seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, some immigrant advocates (and the editorial board of El Diario) decried the appointment, pointing to her historically conservative record on immigration issues. El Diario went as far as to publish a cover story on Gillibrand with the headline, "Anti Inmigrante."

Hundreds of ethnic media organizations across the country are organizing to demand action on federal immigration reform. New America Media, an association of ethnic news outlets, has produced an editorial calling on the White House and Congress to enact a "just and humane" reform package.
