New Music, Old Roots

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Listen to new music with old roots on this New Sounds program.  Hear from the latest release, “Bella Ciao” by New York band Barbez, led by Dan Kaufman.  Inspired both by ancient Roman-Jewish melodies, Italian neorealist cinema, and more immediately, by the songs of resistance during the Nazi occupation of Rome by the Italian partisans of World War II.  The tunes weave European folksong, post-war classical, and experimental rock into heavy otherworldly protest cinema-scapes.

Global Jewish Music

Thursday, April 04, 2013

For this New Sounds, hear arrangements of Jewish wordless songs of praise from around the world.  There’s Nigerian style Afrobeat, trancey jazz, Afro-cuban dance music, a DJ collaboration, and music from the Jewish people of Uganda.  A Fela Kuti-style band, led by guitarist Jon Madof does up the prayers that Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach set to music, and takes as its name “Zion80,” a nod to Fela’s “Nigeria 70/Africa 70.”
