Big Bands, New Sounds-Style
Saturday, January 14, 2012
We’re all about music for big bands on this New Sounds, and that’s certainly not the 1930’s swing bands. Listen for elements of rock, classical, and minimalism to crop up in music from Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. We’ll also hear one or two arrangements of Bjork tunes by Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra. Plus, there’s also a long-form suite of music from John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, along with music from the Industrial Jazz Group as well.

For this New Sounds, hear new music for large ensembles, sometimes with lots of brass, sometimes with an electric guitar. We'll dig into the record "Infernal Machines" by Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, which brings together the best of mid-century big bands and the minimalism of Steve Reich. There's also music by John Hollenbeck & the Jazz Big Band Graz from Austria along with music by New Yorker Roy Nathanson and the Jazz Passengers. Plus, music that looks to Ethiopia from the Either Orchestra, and more.

Mind control experiments and conspiracy theories are the subject matter for brand-new music performed by an electric chamber ensemble and a Grammy-nominated big band. Those are just two of the four offerings on this New Sounds Live concert at Merkin Hall, part of the Ecstatic Music Festival, on Thursday February 24, 2011 at 7:30. Socially engaged, hybrid genre-straddling ensembles Newspeak and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society take on brand new works written specifically for each.
