The NYPD credited citywide declining homicide rates to its increasing reliance on the controversial practice of stop-and-frisk last week. But in the 13 precincts citywide where homicides were trending up so far this year, a WNYC analysis of the data found that an increase in stop-and-frisk in the first quarter of this year did not always result in fewer homicides so far this year.

The NYPD's latest numbers show homicides are on track for a 5 percent decline over last year, though overall crime is at about the same level. But a precinct by precinct evaluation shows some significant swings in both directions.

New York City's Murder Rate on the Rise

After nearly ten years of dramatic decline, New York City's murder rate is on the rise. As of last Sunday, the Police Department says 386 people have been murdered this year. That's a 13.2 percent jump from the 341 murders at the same period last year. The number of people shot has increased too, by 4.5 percent.
