For this New Sounds, listen to music that is rooted in the shape-note singing tradition from the 19th century, with tunes and texts directly taken from Protestant hymnals, and other works originally notated in "shape notes" (square, round, triangular, and diamond-shaped note heads) that enabled non-music reading congregations to sing them. Listen to a brand new duo recording from trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Uri Caine, who arranged some of these tunes, and wrote originals inspired by these shape-note hymns, but wordless. Then, from Anonymous 4, listen to vocal renditions of these tunes, where the quartet sings the hymn through in the solfège syllables (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti) before adding words on the second time around.

It’s a modern liederabend, literally “song night,” for this New Sounds show. Listen to vocal and choral music from living composers like Missy Mazzoli – and some of her multimedia chamber opera about Isabelle Eberhardt, as well as MIT professor Tod Machover – and an aria from his opera VALIS, based on the Phillip K. Dick novel. Also, there’s music by Paola Prestini inspired by Kandinsky's 1912 manuscript of woodcuts and prose, “Sounds.” Also, listen to new music from Bryce Dessner, featuring the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Kronos Quartet from his recent release, “Aheym.” And more.
This Friday, 11/22, and Saturday, 11/23 at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) is the third biennial Lieder-pa-looza, featuring many of these works. Details here.

This season’s New Sounds Live Concert Series gets underway when Mos Def, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, songstress Mellissa Hughes, and other special guests join members of the Brooklyn Philharmonic for a "reduction sampler." Hear Derek Bermel’s arrangements of Mos Def’s original songs, 19th century Shape Note singing, works by David T. Little, Lev Zhurbin (aka Ljova), Corey Dargel, and Frederic Rzewski, all in small ensemble versions of music that the full orchestra will play later in the season. The performance takes place at 7PM in the World Financial Center's Winter Garden on Wednesday October 12, 2011. Admission is FREE.
