There's an article in today's New York Times about anger over bear bile farming in China and the growing animal rights movement in that country. Bear bile is an ingredient in some Chinese medicine, and the methods for collecting it from bears held in captive is seen by many as animal cruelty. New Jersey gets a lot of attention for its annual bear hunt, which wrapped up last week with 464 kills. But that's just one of the ways the state's wildlife officials are managing the bear population year round. Bears have turned up in every county in the state, including a few blocks from the George Washington Bridge — and there are an estimated 3,200 bears in Northwestern Jersey alone.

It's considered the best weekend of football, the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, has been vocal all week in the runup to Sunday's big game. Many criticized him for talking too much, but his team lived up to all the talk, upsetting the Patriots 28-21.
