For LeBron James and the Miami Heat, the season of great expectations begins tonight against Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Celtics. It's one of the most anticipated basketball seasons ever, especially for Heat fans. In addition to James, the Heat have added perennial all-stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to their roster. The Takeaway's sports contributor, Ibrahim Abdul-Matin tells us if he thinks anyone can beat the Heat this year.

US Basketball Team Preps for World Championship

The basketball World Championship is set to begin in Turkey at the end of the month. In an exhibition game this weekend, Team USA handedly defeated France 86-55. The team is playing out without basketball superstars like Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, but there seems to be a new talent on the court: Kevin Durant. LeBron James Courtship Comes to an End, but at What Cost?

Last night, in a prime time spectacle, LeBron James announced which NBA team he's joining: the Miami Heat. He was only a free agent for a few days, but the machinations to woo the best player in basketball have been underway for years. In particular, The New York Knicks have suffered two terrible seasons as they cleared out players to make salary-cap room for big name free agents this signing season. Stocks even moved based on rumors he was coming to New York. Cleveland has calculated the impact of this one player on the downtown economy and regional business. It's in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

LA Lakers Triumph in Close Game

'Los Suns' Take the Court in Protest

Instead of their usual jerseys, the Phoenix Suns wore shirts with "Los Suns" inscribed across the chest as they played the Spurs last night. This change in wardrobe was explicitly meant as a nod in support of Arizona's Latino population, and a protest to Arizona's new immigration law, signed by Governor Jan Brewer last week.

    Kobe Bryant Makes 25,000th point

    With a free throw in the second quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers played the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kobe Bryant became the 15th player (and the youngest ever in the 63 year history of the NBA) to reach 25,000 career points. 

    Kobe is still just 31 years, 151 days old, and got to point 25,000 in 35 fewer days than Wilt Chamberlain, who finished his career with 31,419 points. Yes, that is THE 'Wilt the Stilt,' who once scored 100 points in a game!
