Hear some rock and/or classical hybrid ensembles on this edition of New Sounds.  There's relatively older music from the 1980's by Mikel Rouse, and some from Bang on a Can folks along with brand new music from Bing & Ruth (David Moore) and Newspeak.  That, and more.

From the New Sounds Live concerts at Merkin Hall, the Bang On A Can All-Stars play a new work by Kate Moore, and sonic explorations at either end of the volume spectrum, from the soft, almost subliminal acoustics of Alvin Lucier.

On this New Sounds program, we'll hear music from our New Sounds Live collaboration with the Ecstatic Music Festival: the Bang on a Can People's Commissioning Fund Concert recorded at Merkin Hall.  The All-Stars perform Steve Martland's propulsive "Horses of Instruction." Also, listen to the hauntingly subtle “Convex/Concave/Concord” by Danish composer Pelle Gudmunsen-Holmgreen, and the intensely grooving “Believing” by Bang on a Can co-founder Julia Wolfe.  And more.

Here's the rebuttal to last night’s program where the listeners weigh in on the best new music releases of 2010. First off, a big thank you to all of the listeners who voted! We found that there were some hard-fought battles this year between well-waged Facebook (and other social media) campaigns and other organized mailing list calls-to-action. However, we have a clear front-runner, with some unexpected and predictable results.  The voting closed at noon today.  Tonight's 25th annual New Sounds Listener Poll show will contain the music that emerged victorious from this year's contest.

Terry Riley, founder of minimalism, creator of the landmark work "In C," and student of classical Indian vocal master Pandit Pran Nath, joins us for this New Sounds to present new work he's done with the Bang on a Can All-Stars.  We'll hear selections from Riley's "Music from Autodreamographical Tales," where he was asked to write down his dreams and set them to music.  Listen to vivid dreams about zucchini, hazy long bus rides, saints making appearances over Italian lakes ("The Miracle"), and songs about cannabis - featuring Indian raga-inflected vocalizing.  Plus, there'll be sampling from other new recordings from Terry Riley, and more.

This Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m., join Cued Up on Q2 for some of the top performances from this year's Bang on a Can Marathon. In case you don't know, BOAC Marathon is New York's quintessential new music event. Lasting twelve hours, its genre-blurring programming features a slew of globetrotting musicians and composers in contemporary music. Listen in for some of our favorites.

Music by Steve Reich on this New Sounds - a piece of classical music for a rock band - his "2 x 5," from a new recording.  There's also music for electric guitar in a chamber music setting by Canadian composer Tim Brady, inspired by Dmitri Shostakovich, "Hocket, Canon, Fugue."  Plus, listeen to a work for a hybrid electro-acoustic ensemble by Paola Prestini.
