Not long ago, a Republican Governor elected just after the Obama landslide in a “blue” state painted a line in the sand. 

In a big-union state, he took on the unions.  In a state formed by rail transportation, he killed a big federal rail project and sent huge sums back to the federal government.  The more the unions howled, the happier he seemed poking sharp sticks in their eyes.

NJ Refuses to Repay $271 Million to Feds for Axed Arc Tunnel

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told the Federal Transit Administration Tuesday night that he would refuse the agency's demand to have the state pay $271 million for early work done on the cancelled trans-Hudson ARC Tunnel.

ARC is dead. Long live ARC in a different guise.

Tuesday's announcement that the city is seriously exploring sending the No. 7 subway line to New Jersey rippled through press conferences and urban planning groups. At a press conference to announce a comic book to help job seekers, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the crush of riders between New York and New Jersey continues to rise, and that reality demands more cross-Hudson transit capacity.
