A K-12 charter school run by the teachers' union will find out Tuesday if all or some of it can remain open. The latest review cited numerous problems including low student achievement, poor fiscal health and a few cases of corporal punishment.

The United Federation of Teachers came away with two legal victories on Monday. One orders the city to go to mediation to establish a teacher evaluation system at 33 struggling schools. The second ends a long-simmering dispute at the Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem by certifying the union as the official bargaining agent for the school.

A years-long fight over unionization efforts by teachers at a Harlem charter school has crossed the Atlantic Ocean and landed in South Africa, at the doorstep of one of the famous families the school is named after. A letter from Max Sisulu, the speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa, asked the union and school's board of trustees to end their fighting.
