Another year of cuts to schools' budgets has brought with it an anticipated rise in class sizes across the city, with elementary schools seeing the biggest increase, according to city figures. There are now, on average, two more kindergartners per class than there were in 2008, and roughly three more third graders per class from three years ago.

P.S. 19 in Corona, Queens, is one of the most crowded schools in the city. This morning's school opening required military precision, as the school's staff members rushed to get the older children inside -- and their parents to go home -- before the youngest students arrived.

Before protesters could make their way home from City Hall this morning, the City Council announced it will hold hearings on a bill to demand that the Department of Education notify parents of any PCB contamination found during inspection of public schools.
