WQXR 50th Anniversary Show [Album # 26]

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

As part of WQXR's 50th Anniversary celebration, Robert Sherman hosts a program in tribute to WQXR's president, Walter Neiman, featuring remembrances of Nieman from Elliott and Eleanor Sanger and snippets from early WQXR broadcasts, including Norman McGee's 1965 announcement of a new radio transmitter at the Empire State Building and an excerpt from Alec Templeton's April Fool's Show from the 1940s.

The program concludes with a September 18, 1981 performance, by Giora Feidman and Jan Peerce, of "The Rebuilding of the Temple," and "Yiddish Folk Song," followed by Samuel Barber's "Overture to The School for Scandal," performed by the New York Philharmonic, and an excerpt from Aaron Copland's "Music for Radio" by the MGM Symphony.
