On February 1st, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus and its suspected link to birth defects, a global health emergency, something that the U.N. agency has done only three times before. Its director, Margaret Chan, said that this decision was intended to pave the way for globally coordinated fundraising efforts and research needed to fight the virus, but it has also sounded the media sirens. Bob speaks with Christian Lindmeier, communications spokesperson for the WHO, about the delicate balance the agency must strike between raising awareness and potentially inciting panic.
