Bodega Cat Bracket: Your Photos

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

If college basketball players were any better at killing mice in delis, they’d be bodega cats. That’s why this year, we put together a tournament of champions for our city’s feline guardians of the processed food shelves. We asked people who fancy a local bodega cat to take a picture and tag it #bodegacatbracket. We received a staggering 206 entries, from seductive tabbies to scowling Scottish Folds! Now it's time to vote!

This was such a great idea, and it is a terrible disappointment to see it executed so poorly. I would have expected the people at WNYC to put more thought into the mechanics of running an election properly and fairly.

Please edit out the duplicates so that we can vote sensibly, and please post a slideshow so that we can view all the entries before voting. The contest as it stands reflects very poorly on the station.

Hi,
I'm dying to view all 200 plus photos and vote but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get to the complete slide show. HELP!

I agree with those who mentioned too many duplicates, triplicates, . . . . .
and hundredates. Someone at WNYC should have edited out all of those and left only one of them. I voted negatively for dozens upon dozens but then got tired of seeing the same old cats over and over.

I hope one of the UNIQUE kittens or cats wins.

It is hard to pick a winning cat when you have to vote before you have seen all the photos.

There are many duplicates and triplicates. If you want us to get through them, you must do a much better job on your end to edit out the duplicates. I am sure many give up and the kittehs that are posted past, oh say 30 or 40 are doomed to never been seen.

This was not a good way of voting because there were multiple of the same photo and some never came up. You said you were going to choose 16 and then let the city vote, but you did not do that. Could have done this better. I'm disappointed.

I can't find the cat bracket top 16! Where would it be?

When will the sweet 16 be posted? I am excited!

Crowdsourcing photos of cats for a contest may be bringing a lot of traffic to your website and making people smile, but how is it helping NYC's cats? It doesn't. That's why animal rescuers are not sharing this page or hashtag.

Putting bodega cats in the media spotlight like this endangers their very existence. Posting photos of cats sleeping on and next to food? Did WNYC think this through? When bodegas get fined for health code violations and cats lose jobs, will you pay fines and find homes for cats?

If you love NYC's cats, volunteer or contribute to one of the 150+ shelters and rescue groups that work as part of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

classic example of humans and animals working together in the 21st century. We are not exploiting them for their flesh, fluids, fur or offspring. We are working in tandem with these cats to clear out the pests. When it comes to looking cute and striking at pests - they're on the job! days and very long nights.
Love it.

Hi pretty please from pleasanville: We'd be happy to pull in submissions from flickr! If you post there, be sure to use the hashtag and we'll pull it into this storify (which you don't have to have an instagram or twitter account to see).

The NYC Health Department is determined to exterminate the venerable institution of Bodega Cats. Please be circumspect in postings!

Nice idea, but won't it get the bodega store owners into legal trouble? Might be a better idea to just post pics without naming the bodega!

What about Jersey cats? We have bodegas here, too. PS: I love this bracket.

I really really like this topic a lot!
Could WNYC please create a flickr group for this, so us non-instagramers can follow on flickr...is that doable wnyc??? It could be as simple as linking some account to flickr - not sure though.
