Winning Over Trump's 'Other Basket'

When Hillary Clinton made a comment at a fund-raiser last Friday that half of Donald Trump’s supporters could be put in a “basket of deplorables,” it ignited a feud (and inspired an array of t-shirts). What Clinton said about the other basket — the other half of Trump supporters she wants to win over — got very little attention.

"Whenever you demonize the supporters of your opponent, you’re just writing them off," says Eric Bates, executive editor of New Republic, examines the top political stories of the day. "To what extent have the policies she has supported driven people into Trump’s camp? There has to be more introspection and honesty on the part of Democrats to win over Trump supporters.
