What's In the Bridgegate Self-Review?

Thursday, March 27, 2014

→ UPDATE: Read the full report and WNYC's initial findings of the Mastro report here.

Today at 10:30am, reporters were shown the 300p Bridgegate investigation put together by Randy Mastro, the lawyer appointed by Chris Christie to look into the traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge that was created as political payback. We offer live coverage of the press conference and quick reaction to the findings of the report from Nancy Solomon and the rest of the New Jersey Public Radio reporting team.

If the legislative committee calls on Mastro to testify, will he shape-shift and claim attorney-client privilege?

I literally laughed out loud at that lawyer. What a defensive sounding Christie lackey. But then when he said he was there to represent me, the NJ resident, I wanted to reach through the radio and smack his lying face. This is pathetic.

What you would have Brian *not* cover this news conference. Get serious. There was a ton of public money spent on what amounts to an extended discovery but no interviews with Kelly, Stepien, Wildstein or Samson. Kinda makes you question the claim to independence, doesn't it.

On balance, this is another nail in the coffin of what were once Chris Christie's 2016 Presidential campaign.

FWIW, there is no IRS scandal. LW and TP 501(c)x groups were both given additional scrutiny based on a keyword search. The search produced more TP groups than LW groups. I think any group that applies for tax-exempt status "peri-election" is lying through their teeth when the claim that their main reason for being is to affect the outcome of the election. They are just mechanisms to funnel undisclosed money into the process. In this instance, there was no direction from WH to hold up the status for TP groups. End all undisclosed money in campaigns and this problem goes away.

Did anyone else catch the "Well, um..." responses from this "world class lawyer"?
Also, none of the interviewed were under oath because "well, um" it wasn't necessary.
Also, he was appointed by Christie himself and Samson was never interviewed.
Also, the way he went after mayor Zimmer borders on the PERSONAL!!!
Go back and listen...

Does Christie have connections at WNYC? The fact that they're even taking this sham "report" and "news conference" seriously makes me doubt the station's credibility. This is for FOX, not a serious news outlet. I can't wait to hear Jon Stewart's take tonight- it'll be closer to the truth.

Let’s try a new perspective.

In Iraq, Saddam Hussein knew he’d be arrested, so he hid in a “spider hole.”

In Pakistan, Osama bin Laden knew he was protected at the highest level, so he built a conspicuous house in a high-security city.

In New Jersey, none of the conspirators feared inquiry by Governor Christie - because they knew he was one of them.

Stop lying and siphoning NJ taxpayer dollars to cover your doo-doo, you fat f*%&. Just fess up and let us move on.

Can you believe he said "Truth"! Utter nonsense. It's a selective acquisition of facts, at best!

I agree with Nick from UWS. This is a total conflict of interest. Mastro has a financial interest in finding Christie did nothing wrong -- of course. The Port Authority officials had a duty to carry out their responsibilities properly, but they didn't do it. The Governor has a duty to treat people and NJ communities equally, but he's a bully so such treatment is beyond him. So why should we believe these lawyers are incorruptible, particularly as they (many) are Christie's friends! What BS!

Brian ,

Another cutting edge segment covering Bridgegate. The governors office directed the lane closures. What else do we need to know? I for one would love to see your show stop copying the topics on the failing Rachel Maddow show and start covering things that matter. A few ideas include the IRS scandal, asking real questions about waste in the state budget, why NYC public schools fail to serve kids properly despite having a $19 billion budget.

What a foolish display of fiction and theater. Gov. Christie is entitled to hire his lawyers and entitled to a fair defense, and even to wage a PR campaign. But this bit of Theater of the Absurd is simply wasting taxpayer money, and wasting a good half-hour of the Brian Lehrer show, as well as all the other media who might report on this as anything other than a personal propaganda construction and fabrication by the Governor -- oh, sorry, he didn't know this would be such a farce. He was not aware, no one told him...

"Our office was retained by the office of the Governor?" What ever happened to the concept of conflict of interest? They are OBLIGATED to report Gov Christie's innocence? This is beyond surrealistic. Pure criminality.

There is way too much emotion in his voice and defensiveness in his tone to convince me that this is not a defense -- especially the TONE and EMOTION with which he opened with a declaration of Christie's innocence and the disdain in tone when he talked about the Hoboken mayor's allegations.

"aberrational behavior" - not the words of an impartial report

The level of BS in this is frightening.

I'm sure I won't be the first to say that I don't believe Christie didn't know. If the Feds find this all to be untrue, I hope Christie has to pay back to the state of NJ the 1 million in public funds he spent on the internal investigation. Why did he find the need to rename it 'lane realignment'? Is that like changing high fructose corn syrup to 'corn sugar'.

Mar. 27 2014 11:47 AM

I'm hearing a lot of "we can'ts" for a report that Mastro described as "thorough and definitive".

You can't have both.

Oh, yeah right. Christie is examining himself with taxpayers money. I'm surprised anybody is taking this seriously? The biggest bunch of BS

Why are you reporting on this report? Shouldn't the lede be something like:

"Governor Christie hired lots of people to say that Governor Christie knew nothing about Bridgegate. Meanwhile, the Bridgegate Principals continue To remain silent and dodge Subpoenas."

Let's talk about something more interesting.

Why are you guys destroying your image as adults with critical thinking by having a serious discussion about this "report"? You sound like children; "Daddy wrote the report and he said he didn't do it!" STOP IT TALK ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE

Mar. 27 2014 11:37 AM

A million dollars for nothing new...Sounds about right for use of public money. Christie did the same with the Senate special election, didn't he? $12M+ to not have his name on the same ticket with Booker. That's a conservative for ya.

Are any but the already sold buying any of this?

Mar. 27 2014 11:35 AM

Why are you even taking this seriously, as if there could be a drop of truth in this "report"? Why are you discussing this? Are you that naive?

Gov Christie investigated himself, did he? At the taxpayer's expense, did he? There is no bottom to his depthless corruption and megalomania. Who could POSSIBLY believe an investigative report that he himself orchestrated? Is he insane?

Mar. 27 2014 11:31 AM

A million dollars and counting of taxpayer monies appropriated by Christie to hire his own trained dog to tell us he did nothing, nothing.

The guy didn't even talk to Bridget Kelly. Didn't talk to David Wildstein. Didn't talk to Bill Stepian.

This report isn't worth the reams of paper it's written on.
