Republicans are preparing to announce their candidate for governor of New York and Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is expressing interest in the job.
Astorino told reporters at the State Capitol recently that he can draw on his experiences governing a large suburban county to lead New York State.
"I think this state is going in the wrong direction," he said. "I feel very strongly about that."
Astorino, a former radio executive, has won the county executive's seat in Westchester twice. But most believe he'll face an uphill climb against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking re-election.
Siena College's Steve Greenberg said the most recent poll has Cuomo leading Astorino by 42 points, and that nearly three quarters of New Yorkers polled said they'd never heard of Astorino.
"Right now Cuomo is in a very strong position. That said, we are more than eight months away form an election," he said. "That’s many lifetimes in politics."
It's also not settled whether Astorino would be the only GOP candidate for governor. Real estate developer Donald Trump has expressed interest in the Republican ticket.
