West Farms 10460: An Overview
Gregory Jost, adjunct professor of sociology at Fordham University; a researcher, facilitator, and organizer with expertise on the history of redlining and the Bronx; and a consultant with the Banana Kelly Community Improvement Association — and Wanda Salaman, a longtime activist and the executive director of Mothers on the Move, a member-led community organization that advocates for the well-being of low-income people of color in the South Bronx — offer a historical and sociological overview of a neighborhood in the Bronx that has become the epicenter of the economic toll of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City and kick off our series, West Farms 10460.
Fantastic show today. Loved how @gregory8jost gave a quick, yet exceedingly thorough, review of how (mostly) anti-black housing policy has resulted in the impoverished black and brown neighborhoods across the US.

@BrianLehrer West Farms Bronx 10460 I grew up in 50s - lots of food stores, fish stores - and we were poor. A revelation how terrible it is now. X Bronx xpressway ruined our neighborhood. Three cheers to all on Daly Avenue and time for action.

.@BrianLehrer, I live in the BX, and I'd like to see a movement to make our communities more self-sustaining and not reliant on help that the powers don't want to provide. If we could green all the roofs, we could turn West Farms back into farmland and mitigate the food desert.

Thank you @BrianLehrer caller describing hazards & inaccessibility of NYC bus stops after snowstorms — problem in all boroughs, very dangerous. #AskTheMayor

Brian, asking again: please have @TransAlt @RidersAlliance @CID_NY & other organizations on regularly as guests. 🚍
@BrianLehrer I took the 2 train from 72nd to West Farms for 4 years. The STAIRS are horrendous. I counted over 100 to get from the street to the platform. I can’t imagine the respiratory droplets spreading around with people trying to get up them. Hello Covid spread.
