Weekend Staff Picks: Viols, Ink & Football
Saturday, May 03, 2014
Here are some of the events our New York Public Radio staff members are checking out this weekend.
JEFF SPURGEON, WQXR classical host: Jeff suggests the farewell celebratory concert of the New York Consort of Viols at Little Church Around the Corner in Manhattan on Sunday at 7pm. The Sweet Power of Music will be an evening of songs and readings from Shakespeare's time on the subjects of music, love, life and death.
KHIM DAVIS, manager, community engagement and audience development: Khim had a thrill and a surprise after she posted a photo of the work of Shantell Martin on Instagram: the artist herself commented. Martin's Are You You exhibition is at MoCADA, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn and runs through the end of July.
JIM O'GRADY, WNYC reporter: Jim is planning to celebrate his roots by attending a Gaelic football game in The Bronx. It's expected to be a rough match for the New York team in the Gaelic Athletic Association because they are playing the powerhouse team from County Mayo, Ireland. Jim warns it will be crowded and the only way to get a ticket is to get to Gaelic Park in the Kingsbridge Neighborhood early for the 2:30 pm game.
