"We need New Dylans. New Public Enemys. New Simones. New De La Rochas"

The Brian Lehrer Show | Dec 9, 2014

This segment originally aired live on December 9, 2014. An edited version was included in a best-of episode of The Brian Lehrer Show on December 24, 2014. The unedited audio can be found here.

On Instagram, Roots drummer Questlove called for artists to release protest music in response to the nonindictment of Officer Pantaleo last Thursday. Protest music has played an important role in shaping American social justice movements, and it seems to be on the rise again. Artists like Alicia Keys, G-Unit and Tom Morello have already released songs in protest. Brown University Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Race + Ethnicity in America Tricia Rose joins us to discuss what music means to the protests and communities across NYC and the nation.

Here are some more protest songs that we'll be discussing:

J. Cole - "Be Free"

Tom Morello - "Marching On Ferguson"

G-Unit - "Ahhh S***" (uncensored)

Have you heard other new protest songs reflecting on the non-indictments of Officer Pantaleo and Officer Brown? Share them with us in the comments.
