Understanding the Syrian Conflict

The Leonard Lopate Show | Mar 6, 2017

Director Evgeny Afineevsky joins us to discuss his documentary, “Cries from Syria.” He’ll be joined by Kholoud Helmi, an editor and co-founder of underground newspaper Enab Baladi, and one of the film’s subjects. “Cries from Syria” looks at the ongoing conflict and gives an overview of the past six years, beginning with the Arab Spring, the Syrian civil war that resulted from the clash between the army of President Bashar al-Assad, the protesters-turned-fighters, foreign intervention in the conflict (particularly the attacks on civilians by Russian forces) and the resulting refugee crisis.

"Cries from Syria" will be showing at the Cinema Village on Friday, March 10th for one week. For more information, click here.

"Cries from Syria" airs on HBO on Monday, March 13th at 10:00pm. For more information, click here.
