Why Trump and Clinton Will Visit New York on the Campaign Trail
Now that the conventions are over, the presidential candidates are campaigning vigorously, with several campaign stops planned in New York.
Hillary Clinton's schedule this week includes a visit to Omaha, Nebraska among other places, while her surrogates are slated to hold fundraisers in Brooklyn later this week. The Democratic presidential nominee spent the weekend in the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Ohio.
"Clinton is trying to show a bit more of a human touch in her campaigning," said Michael Morey, managing director of SKDKnickerbocker.
Donald Trump is slated to appear at a town hall in Columbus, Ohio and several other states. The Republican presidential nominee is also scheduled to hold an event Thursday in tiny Plattsburgh, New York.Â
With the clock ticking down to the November election, time is one of the candidates' most precious resources. A decision to rally in a small town could waste resources that could be better spent visiting a higher profile, more populated place.Â
"When you go to the small city it's usually to drive home a particular point," said Morey, who is also a former press secretary to Senator Charles Schumer.
In this instance, Morey said Trump probably wants to drill down on the overwhelming support he's receiving from non-college-educated whites.
According to the latest U.S. Census figures, the town's population is estimated to be 19,806 and 89.9 percent of the residents are white.
"It's an odd place for a rally," said William Cunningham, managing director of DKC Public Relations.
"The campaign decisions now are about using resources as efficiently as possible."
Though both strategists expect New Yorkers will become sick of both candidates in coming months, as New York is a media capital for the nation, and also home to many key financial donors.
Morey also thinks Trump will be in New York City a lot because the billionaire doesn't want to give up life in his penthouse apartment.
"It's not about New York, it's because he likes to sleep in his own bed at the end of the day," said Morey.
