Tribute: Walter Liedtke

The Leonard Lopate Show | Feb 6, 2015

Six people died when a Metro-North train crashed into a SUV in Westchester on Wednesday night around 6:30. One of them had been a guest on our show many times – Walter Liedtke, a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was an expert on Dutch and Flemish painting, and had curated exhibits on Vermeer and Rembrandt for the Met, as well a commemoration of the 400th anniversary of El Greco’s death last fall. But more importantly, he had the rare skill of being able to “open up” the work beneath a painter’s brush so that you saw it with new eyes. It was a very special gift. He was 69. You can listen to some of his interviews with Leonard here.

On September 18, 2009, Walter Liedtke discussed the exhibition "Vermeer’s Masterpiece The Milkmaid."

On November 1, 2007, Walter Liedtke discussed his exhibit “The Age of Rembrandt: Dutch Paintings in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.”
