Tribal Justice in the American Court System

The Takeaway | Aug 21, 2017

What does reformative justice look like? The new POV documentary Tribal Justice, premiering tonight on PBS, looks at two Native American women who are reforming the criminal justice system by restoring their communities rather than punishing offenders: Abby Abinanti, chief judge of the Yurok Tribal Court and the first Native American woman admitted to the State Bar of California, and Claudette White, chief judge of the Quechan Tribal Court in the Southern California desert. Both judges are passionate about preserving their cultures and dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline.

Judge White and the documentary's producer and director, Anne Makepeace, join The Takeaway to talk about her work and her personal experience with the criminal justice system.

This segment is hosted by Ray Suarez.
