“Transparent” Creator Jill Soloway Talks With David Remnick

Jill Soloway grew up with an “unavoidable, constant obsession with gender.” When her father transitioned to being a woman, Soloway channelled the experience into the television show “Transparent,” starring Jeffrey Tambor; she hoped to transform the way audiences understand gender. The Golden Globe-winning series is entering its third season this month, and Soloway is at work on “I Love Dick,” a new series based on the novel by Chris Kraus. The new show is provocative, to say the least. Soloway spoke with David Remnick about how she runs her television sets, the criticism she received when she cast a straight man as a transgender woman, and what she’s doing to upend the patriarchy.
