Coming up on today's show:
-
John Cassidy, staff writer at The New Yorker, talks about the latest national political news, including the Inflation Reduction Act, the promising jobs numbers and the broader economic outlook.
-
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett discusses the many health challenges facing New Yorkers including monkeypox, COVID-19 and now polio.
- The Republican governors of Arizona and Texas have, as a political ploy, begun to bus migrants arriving at their borders to New York and other East Coast cities. Local nonprofits and volunteer groups are struggling to cope with the number of people seeking assistance. Murad Awawdeh, executive director at the New York Immigration Coalition, and Maryann Tharappel, Special Projects Director of Immigrant and Refugee Services at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, discuss this news and how their groups are responding to the needs of new arrivals.
-
Steve Zeitlin, founding director of CityLore and author of The Poetry of Everyday Life: Storytelling and the Art of Awareness (Cornell University Press, 2016), and Bob Holman, poet, filmmaker and proprietor of the Bowery Poetry Club, talk about their new project, a forthcoming book of poems called All the Voices: Where I'm From – Politically. They are inviting listeners to participate and will be taking the POEMobile on the road in August to gather more poems. They are joined by contributors Simba Sandra Yangala, who emigrated to the U.S. from Zambia as a teenager, and Kieran Coughlan, who runs H & C Truck Repair in Yonkers.
Transcripts are posted to each segment as soon as they are available.
