#3282: Teach Your Children Well

Email a Friend

For this New Sounds, listen to music by the sons and daughters of really fine musicians.  We’ll hear Shona music from the country of Zimbabwe by Baba Maraire (formerly Tendai.) His father, Dumisani (Dumi), an ethnomusicologist, was one of the first African musicians to build a grass roots movement of marimba, and came to be informally dubbed, “Godfather of Shona Music.”

There’s also music from Argentinian bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi, together with his son, guitarist Jose Maria Saluzzi.  Plus, something from the Malian singer and guitarist, Vieux Farka Toure, together with his father, Ali Farka Toure.  Rounding out the show is sitar music from Anoushka Shankar, daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar.  If we're lucky, there'll be time for yet another recording of father & son: guitarist Gyan Riley and his dad, founding father of minimalism, Terry Riley, who'll be at the piano, playing a work by Gyan.
