This morning Americans awoke to find that they now have more in common with Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo—we're a nation without a functioning government.

While those places have been victims of violence, war and poverty, the government-free condition of the United States is completely self inflicted: America has shut down its own government over a disagreement that couldn't be resolved by midnight.
