Staten Island Blues Live Chat

On Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013, young people will come together online to discuss the prescription drug abuse epidemic. This live chat will allow teens from hot spots around the country to talk about their perspective on the problem, including New Mexico and Kentucky, both places with some of the highest prescription drug overdose rates in the nation.

Here in New York City, prescription opiate overdose rates on Staten Island are four times higher than the rest of the city.  At any given time there are enough oxycodone prescriptions written for one-third of the entire borough's population. But this isn't just a problem here -- it's an issue across the country, especially in non-urban areas.

From Santa Fe, YouthWorks will be joining in on the conversation. Listen to students from Santa Fe's Youth Media Project discuss the temptations of prescription drug abuse.

Also taking part in the live chat will be teens from Appalshop, an arts and education center in Kentucky, a state where more people die from prescription drug overdoses than car accidents.

"Clamps" is a short narrative piece about prescription drug abuse produced at Applashop in 2009:

"Because of Oxycontin" was produced there in 2001, when the problem was just beginning.

A group of Staten Island hip hop artists produced this music video to highlight the prescription drug abuse problem where they live:

This live chat will be hosted by 18-year-old Radio Rookie Tasina Berkey, who reported this story about prescription drug abuse on Staten Island.

Tasina will lead young people in a discussion about:

  • Their perspectives on prescription drug abuse
  • Why opioid abuse is more of a problem in certain areas
  • Whether they're seeing an increase in heroin use where they live
  • What they think could be done to address the problem
